How do I make my cut flowers last?
Although certain flowers require different care, there are some general rules that apply. The majority of cut flower products prefer cooler temperatures and higher humidity. With this in mind a typical home can create problems throughout the year.
Heat registers and low humidity can be a problem in the winter and warmer temperatures and direct sunlight can be problems in the summer months. Air quality such as cigarette or pipe smoke can shorten a flower's life and so can water quality. Many of those factors are not controllable so we just suggest using common sense:
- Do not put cut flowers in direct sunlight
- Keep away from heaters
- Change water periodically to keep ethylene gas emission to a minimum
- Remove expired blooms and dead foliage to reduce ethylene gas emission that can seriously reduce the life of the other flowers
- Use a flower preservative (usually provided in packets from the florist or incorporated in the water of an arrangement)
- Upon receiving a bouquet of cut flowers, cut the stems (under water if possible) and place into warm water right away so the bottoms of the stems don't dry out
- Re-cut the stems on an angle (under water if possible) to allow the stem to drink more easily
- Make sure water levels are as high as possible. Flowers tend to be happier when more of the stem is submerged in water.
- Roses are in a class of their own and can be a thorn in everyone's side; including the florist! Roses are very finicky and are susceptible to many problems.
If you have any problems with your Mom&Me roses within the first 2 days please contact us immediately. We can give you further directions or we may decide to replace your order at no extra cost to you.
It is vital that we know about a problem right away so that we can investigate the cause. If your roses are wilting try re-cutting the stems under warm water. If you are still unsuccessful, submerge the entire flower (including the blossom) in a sink of warm water for 15 - 20 minutes. Place a cloth over the stem to make sure it is fully under the water. As a final resort try cutting the stem quite short to allow optimum absorption of water.

How do I care for gift plants?
Florists are not professional botanists but there are certain rules that apply to most gift plants. Our most valuable suggestions to prolong the life of your indoor gift plants are:
- DO NOT OVER-WATER!! This is our biggest problem with planted gifts. Most potted plants delivered by florists are in containers without drainage. Therefore, if the plants are watered too often, a pool of water forms at the bottom of the container and starts to rot the root system. When this happens, the plant may begin to wilt and young buds will dry up and fall off. Most recipients who see a gift plant with these symptoms believe the plant must be needing more water and therefore add even more to an already drowning plant.
The best way to check if a plant needs water is to use a watering gauge to check the moisture in the soil. You can also do a simple check by lifting up the plant to feel the weight. If it is quite heavy then it doesn't need to be watered. Lastly, if possible, water your plants from the bottom by placing them in a tray of water. Be sure to remove any standing water before putting the plant back into its container.
- If your plant is generally looking sick (has yellowing leaves or you think it might have a bug infestation) please don't hesitate to call us. Plants can be sick for many different reasons including temperature and humidity so more information would help us come to a conclusion. If we can't find the answer for you we will try to find someone who can!
- On occasion, plants come to us from the greenhouses with existing problems that aren't detected for several days or weeks. Depending on what the problem is, we would definitely replace the plant at no further cost to our clients.
- The key to dealing with problems is letting us know you have one!!! If you don't tell us, then we can't rectify it.
